Laboratory for Manufacturing Systems & Automation (LMS) is oriented on research and development in cutting edge scientific and technological fields. LMS is involved in a number of research projects funded by the European Commission and European industrial partners. Particular emphasis is given to the co-operation with the European industry as well as with a number of “hi-tech” firms.

LMS is under the direction and technical coordination of Professor George Chryssolouris. It currently employs approximately 120 researchers organized in three different groups: a) Manufacturing Processes Modelling and Energy Efficiency, b) Robots, Automation and Virtual Reality in Manufacturing and c) Manufacturing Systems.​

Sidenor SA was founded in 1962 and is the largest steel industry in Greece. Sidenor Group is a leading steel producer in south-eastern Europe with 6 production units in Greece, Bulgaria, Northern Macedonia and Cyprus. Their products are available in more than 50 countries with a significant contribution to the economic growth in many fields such as building and infrastructure construction projects, shipbuilding, heavy vehicles manufacturing, energy and various other industrial applications. Hans Berg GmbH und Co KG was founded in 1950. It is a medium-sized, family-run company based in Reichshof, Germany, with approx. 600 employees. The development and manufacture of components for radiator technology has been a strong pillar from the very beginning. Since the 1970s, the Hans Berg company has been the European technology and market leader in the field of connection technology for panel radiators.

Today, Hans Berg’s product and process range includes complete connection systems for heating technology as well as airbag tubes, airbag housings and damper elements for the automotive industry.

Savvy Data Systems is an industry driven company, specialized in data engineering, with the aim to technologically push the Industry 4.0 strategy and developments of its customers. ​Founded in 2015, with 12 highly qualified engineers with proven experience in the sector, Savvy has the skills to develop new ICT related technological solutions, with a clear orientation towards the development of a new product-service or function-oriented business model.

​The development and progress is founded on a well-established network of industrial partners and research centres, with whom Savvy works together to constantly exceed state of the art manufacturing technology and ICT technologies for future factories, providing with the necessary knowledge to meet the challenges of machine tool builders and manufacturing companies.

MONDRAGON was launched in 1956 as an outcome of a cooperative business project. It is structured into four business areas: Finance, industry, retail and knowledge. It is a genuine cooperative reality that takes care of its people, competes on a global market and seeks common progress.

​The project is diverse and includes our own university (Mondragon Unibertsitatea), an employment-related mutual provident society (LagunAro), a new business promotion centre, a banking institution (Laboral Kutxa), 12 R&D centres and numerous industrial and retail enterprises.

​Today it is made up of 83 autonomous, independent cooperatives, employs around 70,000 people and is acknowledged for its human dimension, social impact and competitiveness. The Institute for Production Engineering and Photonic Technologies (Institut für Fertigungstechnik und Photonische Technologien – IFT) at Technische Universität Wien is a leading research centre for production technology in Central Europe. With around 90 employees and advanced laboratories, the institute focuses on applied research in manufacturing technology development, machine tool technology, manufacturing automation, digitisation and quality assurance.

​To support technology transfer and ensure the competitiveness of industrial partners, the institute collaborates with industrial companies on around 80% of its research projects. These projects have successfully implemented innovative manufacturing concepts, with the specific design of machine tool structures and manufacturing processes.

The Institute for Production Management, Technology and Machine Tools (PTW) is known for over 120 years of industry-oriented cutting-edge research in the field of production technology. Its focus is on the machining of metallic materials, the construction and design of machine tools and components as well as process optimisation, production organisation and energy efficiency in manufacturing. With their experience and expertise in the field of production technology, they also advise, support and train numerous partners from industry and SMEs.

​As a practice-oriented institute, they bring the current state of research into application in a variety of workshops and further training courses. From Industry 4.0 and lean production to innovative manufacturing processes and measures to increase energy efficiency and flexibility, they offer a wide range of current topics.

​As the development of holistic solutions for production is always based on the triad of people, technology and organisation. This requires depth in the respective specialist topics as well as broad fundamental qualifications in the entire field of production and interdisciplinary cooperation in the team at PTW. They achieve this technical depth in three research areas: production organisation, manufacturing technology and energy flexibility and efficiency.​

The University of Siegen is a young, modern institute of higher education. The overall goal of the University of Siegen is to contribute to a humane future and to take responsibility for people and society. This is reflected in the guiding principle of the University of Siegen: shaping a humane future.

​The PROTECH Institute (Institute for Production Engineering) belongs to the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Technology at the University of Siegen. In addition to teaching, the PROTECH Institute conducts basic and applied research in the following fields: ​Forming technology, production automation and assembly, work science and ergonomics, logistics for manufacturing companies and international production management.

​The thematic orientations of the chairs and departments are closely coordinated. Perspectives on the micro level were combined with the aspects of the macro level such as factory planning or project management as well as aspects of digitization and Industry 4.0. The close partnership and interdisciplinary cooperation of those involved offers the possibility and guarantee for an appropriate holistic and comprehensive view of the problems of production technology.

​The Chair for Manufacturing Automation and Assembly (FAMS) is led by Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Manns. FAMS is part of the PROTECH at the University of Siegen and cooperates with the Department Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of the Centrum for Sensor systems (ZESS).

​Interesting research topics for FAMS are:

  • ​Sensorics acquisition, modelling and simulation of manual assembly processes
  • ​Collaborative robotics
  • ​Additively manufactured, soft robots and grippers

​The Chair of forming technology (UTS) is led by Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Bernd Engel, founded in 2004, works with the help of 15 scientific employees and approx. 8 student and scientific assistants on topics related to the bending of profiles and tubes. The working group deals with the following three main topics:

  • Process control and cyberphysical systems
  • ​Bending of tubes and profiles of metallic materials
  • ​Bending of tubes and profiles of fibre-reinforced thermoplastics

​The UTS conducts application-oriented research in order to address current industrial-related issues in basic research on the one hand and thus to make industrial research usable on the other. The close relationship to industry is often the starting point for innovation and also motivation for engineering research.​

IDEKO is a research centre specialised in industrial production and manufacturing technologies. Its activity covers the identification and analysis of opportunities, the design and development of products, business lines and production processes and the resolution of problems through the provision of technological services such as technical consultancy and equipment-based services.

​IDEKO´s scientific excellence is carried out in four research areas: manufacturing processes, dynamics and control, design and precision engineering and ICTs and automation.

​Located in Elgoibar (Spain), it has a qualified workforce of 120 workers. Its R&D activity is carried out in two buildings and more than 2,000 m2 of prototype workshop surface and various laboratories where it is possible to test and validate machines and production systems. In addition, with the aim of promoting the transfer of advanced technologies to companies and strengthening the competitiveness of the industry, the technology centre has a space for research and development of digital technologies and high-precision grinding solutions, Digital Grinding Innovation Hub (DGIH).

​Linked to the specialization strategy, IDEKO has a policy of alliances and collaborations with R&D centres and innovation agents.
